Ok, so I still don’t think anyone is “following” me, but hopefully soon my family will figure it out! I’m going to give it some time before I let everyone know that this exists.
So the past week has been absolutely crazy and wonderful. Lots of great music happening in Fayetteville! So, let me start by saying I am sooo grateful that today is one of the first Saturdays I have free. I really needed the down time! Usually, I have to work at the cupcake shop from 4:30 to 8:30 am and then go to my Classical Pastries and Desserts class from 9 to 1. We expect today to be a slow one for the cupcake shop, so I didn’t have to work. And Chef Vince told us a few weeks ago we would have today off. Of course, I pack my one free Saturday full of activities: lunch with my nana and mom, running with mom, meeting up with several friends at Farrell’s Lounge and Bar on Dickson St. to watch the Hogs game and then watching a great band, Fatty Lumpkin, at Rogue. But back to my original point, this past week has been freaking awesome.
First, Andy Frasco played at George’s. I have seen them multiple times before. Every time they come to Fayetteville they end up staying for a few days (because we’re just THAT awesome). This visit was no different. This band is fun to watch live, especially if you feel like gettin’ funky. It’s interesting to watch Andy grow as a musician and learn to harness his on-stage persona. The first night they played an “acoustic” set. It was very chill with just enough groove to make you wanna get up and dance.
The Ryan Montbleau Band played after Frasco. I haven’t seen them in probably a year and they were just as good as I remember. Listening to their studio albums just don’t do them justice. (But a great substitute if you can’t see them live as often as you like!) I liked hearing new songs that I didn’t know (because I didn’t get their new record until that night) dispersed throughout the songs I knew all the words to. Interesting sidenote, this was the only free show they played on their cross-country tour. Again, we are just THAT awesome.
Andy Frasco played again the next night, as Galactic played in the back at George’s Majestic Lounge. The Galactic show ended relatively early (around 12 or 12:30). Much to Andy’s surprise, Stanton Moore sat in with him and the rest of the band afterwards and it was an awesome jam session. (Several other local guys got on stage, as well) I just know that for those guys, getting a chance to play with Stanton Moore has to be a highlight of their tour!
Well, I said at the beginning that I would tell funny, random stories. I’m pretty sure the following classifies as such. I was outside chatting with friends after the show. Somehow a girl came up to us and struck up a conversation with me. In short, she asked if she could kiss me and if I would consider “batting for the other team”, so to speak. Although flattered, I had to respectfully decline her offer. I guess this just wouldn’t do for her, so she proceeded to take off her purse…and then her jacket…and then her shirt! I tried to stop her but she assured me she had an undershirt on (she did). She then handed me the Galactic shirt she had been wearing and she told me to keep it so I could “remember her forever”. Sometimes, my life is ridiculously random. I gave the shirt to a cute boy, instead. Pay it forward, right?
So at this point, I was pretty tired and really could’ve used a quiet night at home with my Lola Belle. But my sister, ZZ, was coming into town and I knew I wouldn’t be able to tell her “no”. Perpetual Groove played at George’s Majestic Lounge. It was a small crowd (probably because everyone was worn out from all of the other awesome shows!) but it ended up being so fun! They surprised me with a few of their cover songs: Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds (The Beatles), Gone til November (Wyclef Jean), my absolute favorite, I’m in Love With a Girl (on marijuana) (Tom Petty) and an awesome sing-a-long finale of Sweet Caroline (Neil Diamond). My sister and I seemed to be the only two people in attendance that were familiar with the Tom Petty song; it felt like we were singing in a trio with Brock Butler. They didn’t take a set break, which to me, made it seem like it was a shorter show (it wasn’t, I’m just used to bands taking 30 min. + breaks). It was also tough deciding between peeing your pants or staying to listen to their groove. But nonetheless, an amazing show!
A few days after the show I was digging through my purse and found something unfamiliar. It was a piece of paper and as I was unfolding it I was thinking “did I make a grocery list? But this doesn’t look like my handwriting…” Then I realized what it was: the P Groove set list! I had completely (I mean..completely) forgotten that Hruby handed it to me after the show! All of the shows were so much fun and I am so happy I am able to see amazing live music just right down the road! Amongst all of this musical madness, I also managed to make it to class. My mom’s law firm paid me to make something for her birthday, which was on Halloween (she was in Kansas for my niece’s birthday party, so we celebrated on Tuesday). After discussing with her for a while, we settled on the Chocolate Lava Cakes with Raspberry Sauce. Coincidentally, my assignment for my Thursday night Bakeshop Operations class was chocolate with three elements. So after seeing the reactions from my mom and her co-workers, I decided I would make them for class, as well. Let me just say, I hate eating raspberry seeds. And I knew this when I started so I tried to strain them and just use a sauce. But the chocolate is too overwhelming and I think the palette really needs the tartness and substance of the whole raspberries to balance out the sweetness. I discussed this with Chef Anna. She agreed that a simple sauce would not be enough to balance out the chocolate. She suggested using raspberry jam to make a gelee to top the cakes with, which I will definitely try next time I make these. She and the rest of my classmates and a few of my neighbors all seemed to enjoy them thoroughly. The recipe can be found here.
Also, since Thanksgiving is coming up, I’ll post a recipe I made a week or so ago. It’s essentially a pumpkin pie with meringue and a tart shell. I absolutely love it, as did my Chef and classmates. It’s like a pumpkin pie that you don’t have to put whipped cream or cool whip on! My mother and I are going to Atlanta for Thanksgiving to spend it with my sister, CC. Neither one of them have ever had pumpkin pie (gasp!) so I’m going to make sure they try this! The recipe can found here. I did find the tart shell to be somewhat dry. Next time I will add a little more butter.
